"...I felt that I should write after watching a news
item on
News
First where a senior member of the UPFA Alliance was vilifying
MTV and its owners for the kind of news coverage that your channels
provide. What came to my mind was the well known adage that it is the
tree that bears fruit abundantly that has the most stones cast at it. I
am sure that you all would have known that you must be doing something
right to receive such attention from a personage like Mr.Weeravamsa (of
the JVP)
For the Tamil community in the north the
MTV
news channel is the only one that is available to us that is
independent and tries to tell it like it is. I for one am greatly
appreciative of the fact that the Tamil viewpoint is given sufficient
airtime, something for which News First must be unique in this country.
Like with all news programmes criticism can be made but overwhelmingly I
would say the balance and the stance is something your organization can
take great satisfaction in. At a time when the state media has been
reduced to the same plight as that seen in totalitarian states, news
programmes such as this are crucial for the public to be informed of
what goes on.
I am sure that you subscribe to the philosophy of
'sticks and stones---'! I am confident that this will only further
encourage your team. I certainly hope News First goes from strength to
strength..."
